You’ve had a hard day at work. Your feet are tired, your back is aching, and the only people that you care to talk to are a certain Mr. Ben and St. Jerry hidden in the back of your freezer. What Is Barre?

Barre classes have gained a fiercely loyal following since they first broke onto the DC scene two decades ago. This exercise took the ballet motions so many of us suffered through as kids and updated them to create a seriously effective and fun workout. These classes blend together fabulous vibes, targeted moves, and a little bit of nostalgia for an activity unlike any other you’ve tried. You are going to leave here with quaking legs and wide smiles. What more could you want?

As you might have guessed from the name, barre usually (but not always) incorporates the ballet barre into your workout, anchoring you and helping you find your balance. Your class will start out with some warm-ups before moving on to a series of repetitive motions like turnouts, plies, and releves. These moves will help you build up your muscles and flexibility. And because the motions are low-impact, you can use them to nurse or avoid injuries.

Often, the classes go beyond your standard dance moves and blend in other forms of cardio and strength training. Many studios offer a full menu of classes that let you dip your perfectly pointed toe into tons of different styles. This gives you the freedom to explore and find the spots you love. Whether you want to find a spot with an amazing community, a killer playlist, or a perfect mixture of the two, there’s a good chance you are about to find the perfect class you’ll want to run to even after the hardest days of work.
